Custom Name and Number Jerseys: How to Choose and Order Yours
A jersey with your own name and number on the back just feels different. It stops being "a jersey" and becomes yours. Maybe it's your surname, a nickname your friends gave you years ago, or the number you wore on a school team. Custom name and number jerseys are also one of the easiest ways to turn a shirt into a personal gift.
This guide walks you through choosing a name and number, avoiding the mistakes that cause headaches later, and ordering a personalized jersey from our store. If you haven't picked your size yet, keep our jersey size guide open in another tab.
What is a custom name and number jersey?
It's a jersey where you choose what goes on the back. Instead of a team's player name, you pick the lettering across the shoulders and the number below it. The front design stays the same, so you get the look you like plus a personal touch.
At 1life2live Store, our jerseys are original designs. Some are inspired by movies, cities, countries and holidays, but none of them are official team uniforms. That's what makes adding your own name work so well: you aren't copying anyone's jersey, you're making your own.
How to choose the name on your jersey
The name is the first thing people read when you walk away, so it's worth a minute of thought.
Your surname
The classic choice. It looks like a real team jersey and never goes out of style. It also works well for families, since everyone can share the same name with different numbers.
A nickname
A nickname is more playful and often gets the best reactions. Just pick one you'll still be happy wearing in public in a few years.
A family or group name
For a reunion, a bachelor party, a fantasy league or a weekend trip, a shared name on every jersey makes a great group photo. Something like the family name, the trip name or an inside joke everyone gets.
Keep it readable
Shorter names are easier to read from a distance. Longer names can still look great, but double-check the spelling letter by letter before you order. A missing letter is the most common thing people wish they'd caught.
How to pick your jersey number
Your number can say as much as the name. A few ideas:
- Your old team number. The number you wore in school, college or a local league.
- A birth year or birthday. Two digits from a year, or the day of the month you were born.
- An anniversary or special date. A sweet idea for a couple's gift.
- A lucky number. Simple, personal and easy to remember.
- A favorite character's number. If a sports movie means a lot to you, the number from your favorite scene can be a fun nod to it.
One small tip: if you want a number like 0 or 00, or a number that starts with zero, write it exactly the way you want it to appear so there's no confusion.

Prices below are what our product pages show at the time of writing, in US dollars. Every jersey listed here comes in sizes XS to 6XL, and each product page says the back can carry a custom name and number.
City and country hockey jerseys
Our original city and country designs are a natural fit for a custom back. The Da Nang Original Hockey Jersey ($79.99) has a wave-shaped bridge, marble hills and a seaside skyline on the chest, with a lace-up collar and long sleeves. The Portugal Original Hockey Jersey ($79.99) carries an azulejo tile crest with the Rooster of Barcelos and a Portuguese guitar. Put your own surname on the back and it becomes a great travel souvenir or a gift for someone proud of where they're from. You'll find many more in our hockey jersey collection.
Holiday jerseys
Holiday jerseys are where custom names get really fun. The Ugly Christmas Nordic Star Pattern Hockey Jersey ($79.99) has an ugly-sweater style print with a Nordic star medallion, snowflakes and pixel pine trees. For the autumn table, the Ugly Thanksgiving Farmhouse Rooster Hockey Jersey ($79.99) features a crowing cartoon rooster, sunflowers and a red barn. Matching holiday jerseys with each family member's name on the back make for a memorable photo. There are also designs for celebrations around the world, like the Philippine Independence Day Original Hockey Jersey ($79.99).
Baseball jerseys
If you prefer a button-front look, the Brooklyn Heritage Baseball Jersey ($69.99) has an arched BROOKLYN wordmark and a suspension-bridge and boardwalk emblem. How to order a custom name and number jersey
- Pick your design. Look for "custom name and number" on the product page. Not every product offers it, so check the page before you order.
- Choose your size and color. Measure your chest and compare it with the size chart on the product page. Our size guide explains fitted vs oversized.
- Write down the name and number. Follow the instructions on the product page. Many of our product pages ask you to put the name and number in the order notes at checkout.
- Double-check everything. Spelling, capital letters, the number and the size. Each jersey is made to order, so getting it right up front matters.

Ordering a personalized jersey as a gift
A custom jersey is a thoughtful gift because it's clearly made for one person. To keep it a surprise and still get the size right, check the chest measurement of a shirt they already wear and compare it with the size chart.
Timing matters. Every jersey is made to order, and shipping takes about 3 to 5 weeks with online tracking. If you're planning a Christmas gift, it's safest to order by around the middle of November. For Thanksgiving (November 26 this year in the US), an order placed now may or may not arrive in time, so plan early.
