Jersey Size Guide: How to Measure and Pick Your Size (Fitted vs Oversized)

Ordering a jersey online can feel like a guess. Is your usual medium really a medium? Will it hang loose like a game-day jersey, or fit close like a team uniform? This jersey size guide walks you through how to measure your chest, how to read our size chart, and how to choose between a fitted and an oversized fit.

If you already own a jersey that fits well, you are halfway there. Keep it handy.

How Should a Jersey Fit?

There is no single right answer. Jerseys are often worn looser than everyday shirts, and it comes down to how you plan to wear it. Here are the three fits most people aim for.

  • Fitted. Close to your body, with just enough room to move. This is a more athletic, team-uniform look.
  • Regular (relaxed). A little room through the chest and body. It is easy to wear on its own or over a tee.
  • Oversized. A loose, roomy fit that hangs off the shoulders and body. It is popular for streetwear styling and layering.

Our own advice follows what is on every product page: compare your measurements with a jersey that already fits you, and order a larger size if you prefer a loose fit.

Step 1: Measure Your Chest

All of our jersey sizes are listed by chest measurement, so a tape measure is the only tool you need.

  1. Stand up straight and relax your shoulders.
  2. Wrap a soft measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms and across your shoulder blades.
  3. Keep the tape snug but not tight, and breathe normally.
  4. Write down the number in inches.

Not sure about your measurement? Ask a friend to help. It is hard to keep the tape level on your own.

Step 2: Add Room for the Fit You Want

A tape around your body only tells you your chest size. A jersey also needs room to move. Our product pages give this simple formula:

Width of your chest + width of your back + 4 to 6 inches for a loose fit

For example, the product pages use an 18" wide chest plus an 18" wide back plus 4" of space, which comes to a size of 40". That falls in our Medium range.

The 4 to 6 inches is the room for a loose fit. Try the formula with 4 and again with 6. With the example above, 18" + 18" + 6" is 42", which falls in our Large range (42"-44"). That small difference can move you up a size, so it is worth working out both before you pick.

Jersey Size Chart (XS to 6XL)

This is the chest size chart we list on our jersey product pages. We checked it across several jerseys, including baseball, hockey, basketball and soccer styles.

Size Chest measurement (inches)
XS 30"-32"
S 34"-36"
M 38"-40"
L 42"-44"
XL 46"-48"
2XL 50"-52"
3XL 54"-56"
4XL 58"-60"
5XL 62"-64"
6XL 66"-68"

Use the inch measurement as your main guide. Sizes can differ from item to item, and not every item goes up to 6XL, so always check the size chart on the exact product page before you order.

Fitted vs Oversized: Which Size Should You Pick?

Once you know your chest measurement, here is how to turn it into a size.

For a fitted look

Pick the size whose chest range matches your measurement. If your chest is 39", the M (38"-40") is your match. If you land between two sizes and want a closer fit, go with the smaller one.

For a regular, relaxed fit

Use the formula above with the lower end of the 4 to 6 inch allowance, then compare the number you get with the size chart.

For an oversized jersey

Order a larger size than your chest measurement suggests. This is what our product pages recommend if you prefer a loose fit. If you are choosing an oversized jersey size, a good method is to measure a baggy jersey or tee you already love, and pick the size that matches that measurement rather than your own body.

If you are between sizes and cannot decide, think about how you will wear it. Layering over a hoodie or tee? Size up. Wearing it on its own and want a cleaner shape? Stay closer to your measurement.

Sizing Tips for Different Jersey Styles

Our jerseys cover baseball, hockey, basketball and soccer styles, and the jerseys we checked all use the same chest-based size chart. If you plan to layer a jersey over a tee or hoodie, a larger size gives you the room.

Sizing Your Custom Name and Number Jersey

Many of our jerseys can be made with a custom back name and number. When you order, put your name and number details in the order notes. Our product pages also ask you to put your chest measurement in the notes, so it is worth having your measurement ready.

One more thing to watch: on the product pages we checked, 2XL is the default size if no size is specified. Pick your size on purpose so you do not end up with a bigger jersey than you planned.

Jerseys such as the Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez 30 white baseball jersey, the Dean Youngblood 10 Hamilton Mustangs hockey jersey and the Ricky Roe 42 Western University white basketball jersey all use this same size chart. For more ideas, read our guide to the best movie jerseys to own.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should a jersey fit?

It depends on your style. Jerseys can be worn fitted, relaxed or oversized. A good starting point is to compare your measurements with a jersey that already fits you, then size up if you like a loose fit.

What size jersey should I get if I am between sizes?

Think about how you will wear it. For a closer fit, choose the smaller size. For a looser fit, or if you plan to layer, choose the larger one.

How do I get an oversized jersey fit?

Order a larger size than your chest measurement. Measuring a baggy jersey or tee you already like and matching that number to the size chart is a simple way to choose.

Where is the jersey size chart?

On each product page. Our jersey sizes are listed by chest measurement from XS (30"-32") up to 6XL (66"-68"), but not every item has every size, so check the chart on the product you want.

What happens if I forget to choose a size?

On the product pages we checked, 2XL is the default size if no size is specified, so pick your size before you order. If you are adding a custom name and number, put those details in the order notes.

Ready to Find Your Size?

Grab a tape measure, write down your chest measurement, and decide how loose you want your jersey to be. Then browse the sports jerseys collection, pick your sport, and choose your size on the product page. Remember to order a few weeks ahead so it arrives when you need it.
